Convert liters to gallons — and back — with the exact US definition (1 US gal = 3.785411784 L), and the UK imperial gallon (4.54609 L) as its own labeled unit so the 20% trap can’t bite you. Loads with L → US gal preselected.
The formula
US gallons = liters ÷ 3.785411784 · liters = US gallons × 3.785411784. For imperial: divide by 4.54609 — pick “Gallons (UK imperial)” in the To menu. Mental math for US gallons: take a quarter of the liters and add 5% back (40 L → 10 + 0.5 ≈ 10.5; true 10.57).
Common values (US gallons)

Fuel, tanks, and the two-gallon problem
Fuel is where most conversions happen: pump volumes, tank capacities, and the mpg-vs-liters-per-100km economy tangle (note that mpg comparisons also depend on which gallon — see the FAQ). Aquariums and containers are second: US products are sized in gallons, everything else in liters. Cooking volumes (cups, tablespoons, fluid ounces) live in the same Volume category of the unit converter — all US customary definitions, labeled as such. Weighing instead of measuring? That’s the grams to ounces converter.
