Convert miles to kilometers — and back — using the exact factor (1 mi = 1.609344 km, which follows from the 1959 foot definition). Loads with mi → km preselected.
The formula
km = miles × 1.609344 · miles = km × 0.62137119 (that reverse factor is 1 ÷ 1.609344 — the converter’s formula line shows it when you swap). Mental math: add 60%, or use the Fibonacci trick from the FAQ.

Race distances and road trips
Running is where the two systems collide hardest: races are defined in km (5K, 10K, 42.195 km marathon) but US runners train in miles — the table above has the classic equivalents. Driving: a 300-mile US road trip is 483 km; a 100 km European sign means 62 miles to go. Fuel economy inverts the logic (mpg vs L/100 km) and speed has its own page — the km/h to mph converter — because limits are posted per hour, not per trip.
