Maintained by ToolsNexus

Recreate your syllabus in a table — homework, quizzes, midterm, final, each with its weight — and read your course grade live, with a nudge when the weights don’t add up to 100 (usually a typo, occasionally a mid-semester truth).

How to use it

  1. Add a row per graded component; name it, enter your grade and its syllabus weight.
  2. Read the weighted grade — it updates as you type.
  3. Mid-semester? Enter only what’s graded; the average covers completed work.

Why straight averages lie

A 95 on homework and a 60 on the midterm do not average to 77.5 when homework is worth 15% and the midterm 35% — the real blend is 70.5%. Syllabus weights encode what the instructor thinks matters, and any grade estimate that ignores them drifts by whole letter grades. This calculator is the syllabus, executed: each component contributes exactly its share, no more.

The mid-semester workflow

The most useful moment for this tool is before the final: enter everything graded so far and you get your current standing — the exact input the final grade calculator needs to tell you what the exam must deliver. Translate the result to the 4.0 scale with the GPA converter, or sanity-check a single percentage with the percentage calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How does weighting work?
Each component's grade is multiplied by its weight, summed, then divided by the total weight. Example: homework 90% at weight 20, midterm 82% at 30, final 75% at 50 → (18 + 24.6 + 37.5) = 80.1%. A component worth half the course moves your grade five times harder than one worth 10%.
My weights don't add up to 100 — is that a problem?
Sometimes it's intentional (mid-semester, before the final exists) and the calculator averages over what you entered. The warning exists because the other cause is a typo — and a wrong weight silently produces a wrong grade.
Can I calculate my mid-semester standing?
Yes — enter only the graded components with their syllabus weights and read the average: that's your standing on work completed so far, exactly the number the final grade calculator wants as input.
How do drop-lowest policies fit in?
Apply them before entering: if the syllabus drops your lowest quiz, average the surviving quizzes and enter that as one component at the quiz-category weight.
Is my data stored anywhere?
No — everything runs in your browser.
