Your text never leaves your browser — counting happens on your device.

Paste your text and watch the sentence count update live — alongside words, characters, paragraphs, and reading time — with boundary detection smart enough not to break on “Dr.” or “e.g.”. Free, no signup, nothing uploaded.

How to count sentences

  1. Paste (or type) into the box — every statistic updates as you go.
  2. Read the Sentences tile; words and characters sit right beside it.
  3. Edit toward your target and watch the number move.

When sentence counts matter

Assignments that specify “8–10 sentences per paragraph”. Summaries capped at five sentences. Readability editing, where the fix for dense text is almost always more sentences, not fewer words — tracking the count while splitting long sentences shows progress instantly. Language learning exercises, abstract limits, and the classic teacher’s instruction to “vary your sentence length” (divide words by sentences as you edit and watch your average shift).

Why this count is trustworthy

Naive counters split on periods and get fooled by “Dr. Smith arrived at 5 p.m. from the U.S.” — one sentence, three false endings. This counter uses the Unicode segmentation rules built into your browser, which know abbreviation patterns and terminal punctuation across languages. The same engine powers the word counter — this page simply puts sentences front and center. Cleaning up pasted text first? Remove line breaks un-wraps PDF copy so paragraph and sentence detection see the text as it was written.

Private by design

Counting is JavaScript running on your device — essays, manuscripts, and confidential drafts never leave your browser, and there’s no length limit because there’s no upload.

Frequently asked questions

How does it know where a sentence ends?
It uses the Unicode text-segmentation standard built into your browser — the same rules professional editors rely on — which is smarter than splitting on periods: abbreviations like "Dr.", "e.g.", and "U.S." don't falsely end a sentence, while genuine terminators (. ! ?) do.
Do headings and fragments count as sentences?
A standalone line without terminal punctuation generally counts as one segment — the standard treats it as a text unit. If your draft is full of headings, count a pasted body section for the truest sentence figure.
What's a good average sentence length?
Readability guidance clusters around 15–20 words per sentence for general audiences, with variety mattering more than the average. Divide the word count shown here by the sentence count for your average — over ~25 consistently usually reads as heavy.
Why do different tools give different sentence counts?
Sentence boundaries are genuinely ambiguous — quotes, ellipses, and abbreviations trip naive splitters. Tools using Unicode segmentation (like this one) agree with each other; regex-based counters disagree with everyone.
Is my text stored or sent anywhere?
No. Counting happens live in your browser — nothing you type or paste is transmitted or stored.
