Turn any color PDF into a clean grayscale version — see every page in black and white before you convert, pick the resolution, and download a file that prints the same way on every printer. Free, no signup, and the document never leaves your browser.
How to convert a PDF to grayscale
- Drop your PDF — the page previews render instantly in grayscale, so you see the result before committing.
- Pick a resolution (150 DPI is right for most printing).
- Click Convert to grayscale and download.
Why people need this
Print cost and predictability lead the list: color laser pages cost several times a black-and-white page, and print shops often bill by color page detected in the file — a grayscale file removes the ambiguity. Consistency is the second reason: every printer driver converts color differently, so the pale blue that looked fine on screen disappears on paper. Converting the file first shows you exactly what will print. And some submission systems (court filings, journals, textbook proofs) simply require grayscale documents.
The tradeoff, stated plainly
This tool re-renders each page as a high-resolution image and rebuilds the PDF from those images. That is what makes the conversion completely faithful — every element, font, and gradient converts exactly as rendered — but it means the output is a rasterized copy: text can no longer be selected, searched, or edited. For printing, nothing is lost. For archiving or further editing, keep the original alongside it. File size depends on page complexity: text-only pages compress very well as grayscale JPEGs; photo-heavy pages may come out larger than the original.
Details worth knowing
Conversion uses the Rec.601 luminance weighting, so relative brightness matches human perception — navy turns dark gray, yellow turns light gray, and contrast relationships survive. Page sizes and orientation are preserved exactly. Transparent regions become white, matching paper. If the goal is a smaller file rather than a printable one, resize pages down with the resize tool; to mark the printout as a draft, add a watermark after converting.
Private by design
The entire pipeline — rendering pages, converting pixels, assembling the new PDF — runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, which is exactly what you want for the contracts and statements that most often need printing.
