What's different about a Georgia paycheck

At Georgia's median wage — $23.16 an hour, or about $48,170 a year (BLS, May 2025) — a single filer paid biweekly keeps about $1,508.82 per paycheck. Over the year that's $3,600 federal income tax, $3,685 Social Security and Medicare, and $1,655 Georgia income tax, before 401(k) or insurance. Source: BLS OEWS May 2025 — Georgia, all occupations

How this is calculated

Net pay in Georgia = gross salary minus federal withholdings minus Georgia income tax. Federal income tax, Social Security, and Medicare use the 2026 IRS and SSA figures (Rev. Proc. 2025-32), computed exactly as on the main paycheck calculator. Georgia levies a flat 4.99% income tax — HB 463 (signed May 2026) cut the rate from 5.19% to 4.99% for all of 2026 — after a standard deduction of $15,000 (single) / $30,000 (married), which the same law raised from $12,000 / $24,000 for 2026. The scheduled deduction step-ups from 2027, dependent credits, and pre-tax items are not modeled.

Georgia switched to a flat income tax and, for 2026, cut the rate to 4.99% (down from 5.19% under HB 463). This calculator itemizes your federal withholding and the Georgia state tax for 2026 and shows the math.

One flat rate, a mid-year cut

Georgia now taxes all taxable income at a single 4.99%, after a $15,000 standard deduction (single) — up from $12,000 under the same law. The rate cut from 5.19% took effect for the whole 2026 tax year, so your annual liability uses 4.99%. The state’s roadmap keeps lowering the rate — toward 3.99% — if revenue targets are met, and the standard deduction is scheduled to keep rising from 2027 under the same revenue tests.

Limits

Covers federal income tax, FICA, and the Georgia flat tax using 2026 figures. It excludes the deduction step-ups scheduled from 2027, dependent credits, retirement-income exclusions, and W-4 fine-tuning. Check your refund with the tax refund calculator; the flexible paycheck calculator handles any state.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Georgia state income tax rate for 2026?
Georgia has a flat 4.99% income tax for 2026. House Bill 463, signed in May 2026, cut the rate from 5.19% to 4.99% retroactive to January 1, 2026, continuing the state plan to gradually lower the rate toward 3.99%.
Did the Georgia standard deduction change?
Yes. HB 463 raised it to $15,000 (single) and $30,000 (married) for all of 2026, up from $12,000 / $24,000. From 2027 it is scheduled to rise by $375 (single) / $750 (married) a year toward $18,000 / $36,000, but like the rate cuts, each step is delayed a year whenever the state’s revenue tests aren’t met. This calculator uses the 2026 amounts.
How much of a median Georgia paycheck goes to taxes?
Georgia's median wage is about $48,170 a year ($23.16 an hour, BLS May 2025). For a single filer paid biweekly in 2026 that is about $3,600 federal income tax, $3,685 Social Security and Medicare, and $1,655 Georgia income tax a year, leaving about $1,508.82 per paycheck — before 401(k), insurance, or any state payroll programs.
Does Georgia have a tax reciprocity agreement with other states?
Georgia has no reciprocity agreements. Employers withhold Georgia tax from nonresidents when more than 5% of their earned income, or more than $5,000 of their wages, comes from work in Georgia.
Do Georgia cities or counties tax wages?
Georgia employers withhold only state income tax — the state’s 2026 withholding guide sets no local wage tax.
How are bonuses withheld in Georgia?
Bonuses are withheld at the flat rate in effect when paid: 5.19% until May 11, 2026, when employers could switch to the new 4.99% rate (HB 463). The annual tax itself uses 4.99% for all of 2026.
