How this is calculated

Net pay in the District of Columbia = gross salary minus federal withholdings minus DC income tax. Federal (tax year 2026, Rev. Proc. 2025-32): income tax on gross minus the standard deduction ($16,100 single / $32,200 married) through the seven brackets (10%–37%); Social Security is 6.2% up to $184,500; Medicare is 1.45% plus 0.9% over $200,000 (single) / $250,000 (married). DC uses seven brackets — 4%, 6%, 6.5%, 8.5%, 9.25%, 9.75%, 10.75% — identical for single and joint filers, after a standard deduction that conforms to the federal amount ($16,100 single / $32,200 married). Worked example — $60,000, single: federal income tax $5,020.00, Social Security $3,720.00, Medicare $870.00, DC income tax $2,453.50 (taxable $43,900 through the 4%/6%/6.5% bands); net $47,936.50 per year, about $1,844 per biweekly paycheck. Credits and pre-tax items are not modeled.

The District of Columbia has a seven-bracket income tax running from 4% up to 10.75% — one of the highest top rates in the country. This calculator itemizes your federal withholding and the DC tax for 2026 and shows the math.

How to use it

  1. Enter your annual gross salary.
  2. Pick your filing status.
  3. District of Columbia is preselected in the state menu.
  4. Choose your pay frequency for the per-check net.

A broad middle band

DC’s brackets climb 4% → 6% → 6.5% → 8.5% (which alone spans $60,000 to $250,000) → 9.25% → 9.75% → 10.75% over $1 million. Uniquely, the thresholds are the same for single and joint filers. After the federal-conformed standard deduction, a $60,000 single earner stays in the lower bands and pays about $2,454. The steep top rates are reserved for high six- and seven-figure incomes.

Limits

Covers federal income tax, FICA, and the DC brackets using 2026 figures. It excludes credits and W-4 fine-tuning. Check your refund with the tax refund calculator; the flexible paycheck calculator handles any state.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Washington DC income tax rate for 2026?
The District of Columbia has seven graduated brackets — 4%, 6%, 6.5%, 8.5%, 9.25%, 9.75%, and a top rate of 10.75% on income over $1 million. The brackets are the same for single and married filers, and the broad 8.5% band covers $60,000 to $250,000.
How much is withheld from a $60,000 paycheck in DC?
For a single filer in 2026: about $5,020 federal income tax, $3,720 Social Security, $870 Medicare, and roughly $2,454 DC income tax — leaving about $47,937 a year, or $1,844 per biweekly check, before any 401(k) or insurance.
Does DC use different brackets for married couples?
No — unlike most states, the District applies the same bracket thresholds regardless of filing status. A married couple filing jointly uses the same 4%–10.75% brackets as a single filer.
Which tax year does this use?
Tax year 2026: the IRS federal figures from Rev. Proc. 2025-32, the SSA $184,500 wage base, and the DC brackets in effect since 2022 (4%–10.75%) with the federal-conformed standard deduction.
