How this is calculated

Net pay in Tennessee = gross salary minus federal withholdings only, because Tennessee has no state tax on income (the Hall tax on interest and dividends was fully phased out after 2020). Using tax year 2026 federal figures (Rev. Proc. 2025-32): federal income tax is gross minus the standard deduction ($16,100 single / $32,200 married) run marginally through the seven brackets (10%–37%); Social Security is 6.2% of wages up to $184,500; Medicare is 1.45% of all wages plus 0.9% over $200,000 (single) / $250,000 (married). Worked example — $60,000, single: federal income tax $5,020.00, Social Security $3,720.00, Medicare $870.00; net $50,390.00 per year, or $1,938.08 per biweekly paycheck. Pre-tax deductions and credits are not modeled; Tennessee has no state or local wage income taxes to subtract.

Tennessee has no state income tax — not on wages, and (since 2021) not on investment income either. So a Tennessee paycheck loses money to just federal income tax, Social Security, and Medicare. This calculator itemizes all three for tax year 2026 and cites its sources.

How to use it

  1. Enter your annual gross salary.
  2. Pick your filing status.
  3. Tennessee is preselected in the state menu, contributing a $0 row.
  4. Choose your pay frequency for the per-check net.

Fully income-tax-free since 2021

Tennessee is a recent addition to the truly-no-income-tax club. For years it levied the Hall tax on interest and dividends — never on wages, but still an income tax. That tax was phased down and eliminated after 2020, so from 2021 on, Tennessee taxes no personal income at all. For your paycheck this has always meant a $0 state row (wages were never taxed), and now there’s no state return to file for investment income either. Compare the same salary in California to see the take-home difference.

The sales-tax trade-off

Tennessee funds itself with one of the highest combined sales-tax rates in the country — 7% at the state level, often near 9.75% with local additions, and it applies even to groceries at a reduced rate. So residents keep their full salary but pay noticeably more on everything they buy. The paycheck advantage is real; the register is where the state collects.

Limits

Covers federal income tax and FICA only, using 2026 IRS figures. It excludes pre-tax deductions, tax credits, and W-4 fine-tuning. Check your refund with the tax refund calculator; the flexible paycheck calculator handles any state.

Frequently asked questions

Does Tennessee have a state income tax?
No. Tennessee never taxed wages, and the last remnant — the Hall tax on interest and dividend income — was fully repealed after tax year 2020. Today your paycheck loses only federal income tax, Social Security, and Medicare.
What was the Hall tax?
A Tennessee tax on certain investment income (interest and dividends), separate from wages. It was gradually reduced and eliminated entirely, so as of 2021 Tennessee has no income tax of any kind — wage or investment.
How much is taken from a $60,000 paycheck in Tennessee?
For a single filer in 2026: about $5,020 federal income tax, $3,720 Social Security, and $870 Medicare — roughly 16% of gross, leaving about $50,390 a year or $1,938 per biweekly check, before any 401(k) or insurance.
Which tax year does this use?
Tax year 2026, per IRS Rev. Proc. 2025-32: the $16,100/$32,200 standard deduction, the seven brackets, and the $184,500 Social Security wage base.
